Regulations for Farmers Markets
What You Should Know
Prince George’s County houses an assortment of farmer’s markets that are dispersed throughout the County. Farmer’s Market vendors offer a variety of goods including raw produce, canned vegetables and fruits, meats, dairy products, cooked/prepared foods, arts and crafts. This serves as a guide to food products served and sold at farmer’s markets.
Required Permits & Licenses
A food service permit is not required if you sell whole and uncut raw produce, fresh herbs, and cottage foods. All other foods require that you either have a
- Prince George’s County Health Department food service facility permit,
- The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) processing or producer mobile unit license,
- Be a recipient of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection program, or
- Be registered with the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA).
Label
All products sold in Maryland must have a label that contains the name and address of the producer or distributor, a quantity statement (count, fluid measurement or net weight depending on the product) and the identity of the product.
